Seems like the whole world is exploding with positive rad things right now. I'm continuously inspired by all the good energy that me and my friends are putting into the world. I head up a group called OuterActive, which handles production and live events at an advertising agency in Miami and Boulder. This past weekend we produced 4 separate events - 1 in Scottsdale, AZ, 2 in Boston and 1 in Atlanta. I flew back to Denver yesterday feeling extra proud to be working with such a professional and solid crew of producers. When I woke up this morning, I saw that Brian Schultz, one of my best friends and my former partner in crime at OuterActive was featured in an article in the New York Times about the events group he is now heading up at R/GA with another close friend and mentor of mine, Gabe Banner. It was so rad to see it, and I love both of these dudes a lot. In the article, Brian gives a shout out to the group we started together about 3 years ago, which was a nice surprise. Read it HERE

The Soul Clap homeboys (Charlie and Eli) are having an amazing year. They released a great mix on Art Department's No.19 label, did an amazing essential mix on Radio 1 and most recently released a super laid back DJ Kicks mix with Wolf + Lamb on K7! records. They also invited fans to make a video for their song "Lonely C" and the submissions are pretty cool. Basically they are making some of the most interesting electronic/techno/house music right now. Steve Powers aka ESPO is an amazing artist who's been keeping it real since forever. My older buddies used to put me on to On The Go magazine, which was a hip-hop/culture magazine he ran in the 90s. Growing up he used to come to Boston every now and then and his graffiti was always the coolest and smartest. I remember he painted my grandfather's warehouse in Cambridge and we used to bug out on his pieces at the trestles. Then he wrote The Art of Getting Over, which to this day, is my favorite book written about graffiti. In 2009 he concepted and produced A Love Letter for You, which is beautiful to me because it interacts with the city in a low-fi and accessible way. Check it out.

Homies Caleb and Allen went to Sao Paulo in 1997 to write an article about the burgeoning graffiti movement that was taking place down there at the time. This video is footage from their trip. The article that Caleb wrote about his experiences hanging with Os Gemeos and other writers in Sao Paulo was published soon after in 12oz Prophet Magazine and was hugely influential on me and many of my friends. This video really captures the vibe of the trip and brings to life the stories Caleb has told me about his experiences in Brazil.

I saw some of the stuff they were preparing to make when I was in Miami last week and it looks rad. Can't wait to see it in real life!

To produce the exhibition FREE SIZE artists Jen Stark, Juan Angel Chavez, P7, and Alvaro ‘Freegums’ Ilizarbe, will work for one week in the Sinudom Silk Screen factory creating works of art.

By bringing these contemporary artists into a global manufacturing hub, the realms of production and creation will exist in a simultaneous space, transforming this modest factory into an active generator of creative capital. “free size” encourages viewers to see industrial spaces as incubators for creative thought and social evolution.

Last night ESPN premiered a new documentary about the University of Miami football program in the 80's and 90's called The U. Through focusing on the controversial University of Miami football teams of the late 80s and 90s, the film reveals so much about the history of the city of Miami, including racial tensions and Uncle Luke. Even young Pres, the mayor and cultural historian of Miami, couldn't do a better job dropping knowledge. This is a MUST WATCH and will be showing again tonight at 11PM EST on ESPN. Super shout out to the rakontur for making such an informative documentary and to the homies at honor roll for scoring the film. More info HERE.

ART BASEL//PRIMARY FLIGHT

One of the most interesting things about Art Basel 09 was graffiti and street art's presence in and around the fair. Primary Flight, the world's largest site-specific street level mural installation, brought some of the most talented graffiti and street artists together in Miami during Basel. All of the Wynwood district in downtown Miami is covered in large scale paintings and installations by some of the world's best writers. Based on conversations with participating artists in this year's Primary Flight, and looking at the work they produced, graffiti as an art form is evolving and changing. Many of the artists are looking for new challenges, and as a result their work is maturing. Artist's like El Mac, POSE from Chicago, SEVER, PUSH, and others are raising the bar for everyone. While traditionalists won't be thrilled to see their favorite graffiti artists creating a different style of work, I am super excited to see where it's all going.

Yesterday I met a graffiti icon who was a big influence for me growing up. ALERT 5av/KBN was one of these guys who was sort of a legend in Boston. In my opinion, his work inspired a generation of writers across the country. I commissioned him to create a small painting, which he gave me yesterday. We hung out and played pool and it was super interesting and cool.

There are so many stories about this piece, from how long it took SABER to paint it, to the time when JA and FOE ragged it out a few years back over beef. It will live on as the stuff of legends.

When I was in high school and early on in college, I was fascinated by Dash and his graffiti. He had a really funky style and pushed it to the limit. Him and his crew IRAK kind of became the downtown charlie browns. They painted with everyone, had the dopest graffiti and fashion styles, had articles written about them in Vice and Mass Appeal, and were just steadily holding down LES. Dash went on to become a reputable artist and showed at the Whitney Biennial in 2006 and was recently represented by Peres Projects. I can think of so many stories about this guy and I have a lot of friends who were super close with him. I know they are sad today and my thoughts are with them. Tiny Vices has some nice pictures by Dash on their site and check out some of his graffiti on Flickr. RIP

Graffiti writers around the world know the name that started it all: TAKI 183. A kid from 183rd Street in northern Manhattan, TAKI 183’s simple signature captured the attention of a reporter and, on July 21, 1971, the article “TAKI 183 Spawns Pen Pals” appeared in The New York Times.

Just like that, TAKI 183 became a graffiti legend, with rumors spreading that he even tagged a Secret Service car and the Statue of Liberty. Amid all the rumors, TAKI 183 remained silent. Now, almost four decades later, TAKI 183 has emerged to tell his story.

I'm continually inspired and amazed by all the innovative thinking my friends are doing. Check this video by Abitare that puts to trial new icons of furniture and product design. In a virtual court, a prosecutor and a defense attorney (Jonathan Olivares and Paola Antonelli from the MoMA) analyze and discuss the merits and defects of the 360° Chair and interrogate the designer, Konstantin Grcic, who is called to the witness stand. All of this is done to give detailed insight into contemporary design and the final verdict is left to the audience. Very cool!

Today the National Portrait Gallery in DC announced it has acquired Shepard Fairey's "HOPE" poster of Obama for their collection. Shep continues to establish himself as the most important pop artist of our generation. Pretty cool. Also...the ICA in Boston is doing a 20 year retrospective of Shepard's work next month, which will definitely be worth checking out.
